Aman and Hassan Jina visit SOS Amsterdam

August 8, 2019

L to R: Hassan Jina, Lone Van Der Wal, Aman Jina, Sandra Sahsilawani

Together with my younger brother Hassan Jina, I visited SOS Amsterdam on Thursday, August 8, 2019.

We were warmly welcomed to SOS Amsterdam by Sandra Sahusilawani who is the Global Philanthropy Advisor for SOS, as well as Lone Van Der Wal, Corporate Partnership Manager.

Sandra was involved in managing Princess Salimah Aga Khan’s visit itinerary for her visit to Vancouver. I outlined the programs offered by SOS Children’s Village BC. They were very interested in the “Youth Ambassador” position as they felt it was a good way to get youth involved in the SOS cause.

SOS Amsterdam started offering some programs in 2018. Its first program is foster care, and the focus is on keeping brothers and sisters together. SOS Amsterdam is also lobbying Dutch lawmakers so that brothers and sisters always stay together. This initiative was prompted because of separation of siblings became an issue.

We greatly enjoyed the visit to SOS Amsterdam. It was very informative. They have sent their warmest regards to SOS B.C.

Aman Jina & Panorama Ridge High School Host Amazing Guest

November 1, 2016

Our executive director was lucky enough to attend an event on November 1, 2016, at Panorama Ridge High School in Surrey featuring We Day's Spencer West - the internationally known motivational speaker - and SOS youth ambassador Aman Jina.

The whole school attended, 1,000+ kids, and Aman did an intro speech andorganized the event.

Spencer then went on to be keynote speaker at We Day a few days later. If you didn't know, Spencer climbed Mount Kilimanjaro using only his hands and a wheelchair!

We also received a $750 cheque from the Free the Children club at the school, thank you!

Bern, Switzerland – Visit to SOS Children’s Villages

August 12, 2016

Bern is the capital of Switzerland and I had the honour of visiting the office of SOS Children’s Village on August 12, 2016. I was joined by my sister Raheesa Jina.

The Managing Director, Mr. Christian Hosmann and Programming Director, Erika Dittli, received us very warmly and gave us an excellent tour of their offices. They updated us on their programming, fundraising and marketing efforts.

Christian Hosmann noted SOS Switzerland is strongly focused on fundraising. As Switzerland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world with high levels of social support, there is no perceived need for an SOS village.

SOS Switzerland was formed in 1964. It started very small, but had the luck to work with Swiss Air as a corporate partner. SOS continues to work with Swiss Air, and now also works with Swisscom, a large telecommunications company. SOS Switzerland also works much more directly with banks who refer some of their clients. SOS Switzerland fundraised $22 million last year.

The Programming Director, Erika Dittli, gave an excellent presentation of the programs in Nepal and Lesotho which are supported by SOS Switzerland.

It was an amazing meeting and very informative to see the different approaches employed by SOS organizations worldwide while continuing to be firmly committed to its global vision to safeguard and support children.

Vienna – Visit to SOS Children’s Villages

August 3, 2016

Aman and Raheesa had the privilege of visiting the SOS Children’s Villages office in Vienna, Austria. This was their second visit.

They met with Rick Miller, Head of Internal Communications as well as Leonora Barclay, Internal Communications Coordinator, and updated them on projects undertaken at SOS BC, such as the recent SOS Walk/Run which we had just completed. Raheesa had just returned from volunteering in Nepal and spoke about her experiences. Rick Miller commented that there are many SOS villages in Nepal. SOS responded in a major way in providing assistance after the earthquake in Kathmandu. The SOS office in Vienna even has a “Kathmandu” Boardroom.

Rick Miller commented that a new area of focus for SOS internationally is training care professionals in order to raise standards of foster care. For example, in Dubai, the government has opened its own villages and SOS is helping to train the SOS mothers. In Dubai, SOS is also helping to formalize training programs, determining appropriate levels of staffing, and establishing a quality assurance program.

At the end of June, 2016, Rick Miller explained that SOS had its General Assembly. SOS leaders from all over the world met at Innsbruck and approved a global strategy to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. At the international meeting, young people had greater involvement. Key goals to 2030 are for SOS to be at the forefront of global advocacy to protect children, and expand operations to protect children at risk.

It was a great meeting and truly heartwarming to see how SOS is forging ahead globally to make a difference.
